The history of the Grand Hotel & Surselva dates back at least to 1908, when it was newly reopened. Built amidst a fir, pine and larch forest, this hotel is rich in loggias, towers, porches and bay windows. Intersoc, Belgium’s number 1 travel agency in “healthy mountain air holidays”, asked U / Define to provide a renovation with redesignation of a few rooms: a ski depot, a daycare and a divisible activity room, easily convertible into a conference room for 100 people with supporting functions.

The activity room is a repurposing of an old garage in the hotel. Three simple interventions – opening the facade, lowering the floor and adding two glass cubes – transformed this space functionally and conceptually. The difference in height with the outside level made it possible to create a stage with storage space underneath for the activities with the children. The projecting glass cubes optimize the available daylight. The various spaces each received a unique color palette that is reflected in the chosen finishing materials and the furniture that has been custom designed by U / Define.

The heart of the baby daycare is defined by an interior element that contains various functions such as storage space, changing table and a separation between the play and sleeping areas for the babies.
