Le Toison d’Or is a hybridization of a traditional building-block typology and a mixed-use development with a retail podium. Situated at the crossroads of two municipalities, Le Toison d’Or forms an important transition point in its area of the city. The project name refers to the two historical gates – the Naamse and Louizapoort – connected by the Guldenvlieslaan.

An essential element of the design is the connection to the existing buildings and the promotion of the atmosphere of the surrounding neighbourhood. In addition, the program and the sustainable aspects of the project form decisive elements in the design.

The architectural vision is based on an analysis of the individual identities of the buildings in the nearby streets. The strong verticality of the existing facade rhythm was continued in the design for the Le Toison d’Or building. The duality of the program (retail and apartments) is translated into the facade design by means of V-shaped portals which act as a visual link between the two functions.
