With the redevelopment of the church, the municipality donates space to community life in Baliebrugge. They want to keep the catholic services and additionally accommodate a multifunctional use of the church to house a daycare, a library, a meeting room and activity spaces for various associations. A symbolic sign of socio-cultural sustainability.

The repurposing of a sacred space requires some tact in the way the space is defined and materialised. A modular plug & play system introduces a cross-rib module, based on a traditional vault system. With one basic module, we can formulate the redevelopment according to the desired configuration of the users.

The plug&play system is a method to maintain a high degree of flexibility in a sustainable and changeable manner. It is a simple architectural intervention that doesn’t attach itself structurally and technically into the existing building but forms a new, freestanding interior layer for the redevelopment of the church in Baliebrugge.
